LEGOs!

I remember my brother getting Legos for his birthday and Christmas every year.  My dad would spend hours putting them together only to have my brother, aka Steveosarus, destroy it all.  But my brother would rebuild it in his imagine.  Over the years, Legos developed Mindstorms, Legos you build and then program to move.  Now they are being used in the elementary classroom to help students learn how to write basic program codes and learn how simple machines work.

They are also being used in the 9 through college level classrooms.  But instead of using original legos, they are using metal pieces which are more moveable with rods and wheels.  But of these help students of all genders and ethic groups to better understand simple machines, how things move and help improve math and science skills.

  1. First Lego League and Junior Lego League are becoming a widely used program in our school district. It wasn't until this year I learned this, but have been studying up on the research. The cool thing about Lego League competitions is that students must use many different skills to be successful when competing. Each year there is a challenge that the students must research and then create a presentation. At the competition the Jr group only present, and in the First they present and complete in a challenge where the robot must complete missions.

It is very cool! I will be starting a Junior Lego League at my school this year.
